24 HAIRCOLOR TERMS TO KNOW
BABYLIGHTS
BALAYAGE
A hair-painting technique that was developed by French colorists. It involves hand-painting strands for a natural looking, easy-to-maintain color. Since it utilizes a free hand technique, balayage can be customized.
BASE COLOR
The color that is applied all over your head or at the root (base) for the starting point of your color service.
COLOR MELT
Colormelting is a technique that can be done with any shade. It is a way to blend multiple colors together to create dimension and a smooth color transition.
CONTRAST
The shade of your highlights against your base color. Think: high-contrast for lighter, more noticeable highlights and low-contrast for more natural-looking swipes of color.
COOL TONE
This term refers to the dominant pigment of the color selected. Cool tones include blues, violets & greens, while cool colors range from platinum and ash browns to plum reds and blueish blacks. They are often used to control warm or brassy tones in the hair.
DEMI-COLOR
Demi hair color is great for those who do not wish to have a harsh color demarcation line or need a color refresh. Demi-color does need developer and depending on the hair type, can yield long lasting results. Demi-color usially lasts 4 to 6 weeks.
DIMENSION
Dimension is the difference between lack-luster locks and a head full of movement brought on by highlights and lowlights. Flat hair is not always referring to the amount of volume someone has but the fact that there is no depth to the hair color.
DOUBLE PROCESS
When more than one hair color technique is applied during the same salon appointment. For example, the trendy shadow root and balayage combo is a double color process. Meaning you first get a base color and then you also get lightener or toner.
FOILYIAGE
Foils provide better, more dramatic results when it comes to meeting higher levels of lift due to the heat component, whereas balayage gives that soft, sun-kissed look. This is a triple process highlight.
FULL FOIL
Foils, foils everywhere! Foils are folded around the head to aid in the processing when color is applied to create highlights or lowlights. A full foil encompasses the whole head, providing your hair with considerable lightness or contrast.
GLAZING
This liquid formula gel is applied all over to add shine and helps improve condition. These demi-permanent colors typically last for up to 2 to 6 weeks. Glazes can be clear to add shine and condition and is a single process color.
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights use blonde or lighter streaks to brighten up haircolor. Highlights add depth and dimension to the overall color and tone of your hair.
LOWLIGHTS
Just as with highlights, lowlights darken strands to ad depth and dimension to the overall color and tone of you hair.
OMBRE’
Omre’ is a gradient transition of color from dark to light , starting lower down the hair shaft.
ORGANIC COLOR
Organic haircolor is derived from natural ingredient sources where possible. The main synthetic ingredients to avoid are; ammonia, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), paraben, resorcinol, formaldehyde, MEA, DEA and keeping the p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) to a minimum.
PARTIAL FOIL
Partial hightlights add a subtle lightness but do not lighten the whole head. These highlights are placed around the face and generally through the top layers of the hair.
PERMANENT COLOR
Haircolor that permanently changes the natural pigment of your hair. It contains ingredients that help the color molecules penetrate the hair cuticle to deposit permanent color. It provides the best gray coverage and can lighten natural hair color.
SEMI-COLOR
A semi-permanent haircolor that deposits color pigment on the outside of the cuticle. Semi-permanent color can darken your hair, but without ammonia it will not lighten the hair. Semi-colors are direct-dyes that do not require a developer. The color will last 5 to 10 washes.
SHADOW ROOT
The natural, low-maintenance look is done by going at least two levels darker at the root, then the rest of the hair, and using a demi-color for depth and highlights for brightness.
SINGLE PROCESS
One color is applied to the entire head, root to ends, in one step.
TONING
Using a demi-color that is applied to damp hair to even out any unwanted hues. For example, you would tone brassy blonde hair to make it icy and white. However, toning isn’t just for blondes. Harmonizing colors can be added to any shade.
TRIPLE PROCESS
When more than two haircolor techniques are applied during the same salon appointment. For example, applying bleach to lighten the hair, then lowlighting darker pieces or shadowing the roots and finally, toning the overall color.
WARM TONE
Warm tones are the opposite of cool tones. Where cool refers to blues, purples and greens, warm tones include yellows, oranges and reds.
